The Moment When Modesty Became A Cult

IMPORTANT NOTE: The “Modesty Memes for Catholic Teens” page is complete Satire and just merely making fun – there are truly people out there that think and believe like this, so please keep them in your prayers.

Please take this as a “tip” to stay far away from scruples and from other people’s ideas of “Modesty”…  Remember, in the end it is literally between us and God when it comes to our Modesty in dress, thought, speech and so on. We have no right whatsoever to judge anyone’s motives (same as with any other sin), and cannot condone such behavior as what will be shown below.

Nor are we obliged to take some random guess of what constitutes as “modest dress” and promote this in such a violent way that it literally DAMNS any other way of thought (because it is possible to think differently than what they are promoting as “Modest”, without damning ourselves.) My goodness.

How is this way of thinking charitable? How is this way of thinking helpful to anyone who does not dress modestly, but is saintly in every other way?

Perhaps this can be called the “Cult of Dress”, where all members hold their vision of “modest” dress as more important than any other virtue, more dangerous than any other sin, and if you disagree there is no hope for you and you are to be shunned like an Amish person.

This is not Catholicism.

This is one good reason why most Catholics (including myself) become very careful when someone begins to talk about Modesty in dress.

So as to not leave the reader (or myself) with a sick feeling in their stomach, some of these (FEW examples!) from the Facebook page “Modesty Memes for the Catholic Teens”, will be both roasted and toasted by Catholic teaching and reliable Catholic sources that debunk them

“You can’t have guy friends”

Apparently they not only have demonic ideas about “modesty” and dress, but they also believe that it is a Satanic trait of sorts for women to be “just friends” with men.

There are so many questions and holes in this argument that it barely warrants a debunking. But for the sake of all poor souls who come into contact with this filthy ideology, this will be debunked below:

The Catechism
of the Catholic Church

on FRIENDSHIP §2346-2347
Christ and Abba Menas
7th cent. Coptic icon
 of the GIFT of SELF
doni sui ipsius
2346 Charity is the form of all the virtues. Under its influence, chastity appears as a SCHOOL of the GIFT of thePERSON. Self-mastery is ordered to the GIFT of SELF. Chastity leads him who practices it to become a witness to his neighbor of God’s fidelity and loving kindness.
2347 The virtue of chastity blossoms in friendship. It shows the disciple how to follow and imitate him who has chosen us as his friends (Cf. Jn 15:15), who has given himself totally to us and allows us to participate in his divine estate. Chastity is a promise of immortality. 2347 Castitatis virtus in amicitiaexpanditur. Discipulo indicat quomodo sequatur et imitetur Illum qui nos tamquam Suos proprios elegit amicos, 232 Se nobis totaliter donavit nosque participes effecit Suae divinae condicionis. Castitas immortalitatis est promissio.
Chastity is expressed notably in friendship with one’s neighbor. Whether it develops between persons of the same or opposite sex, friendship represents a great good for all. It leads to spiritual communion. Castitas praesertim in amicitia erga proximum exprimitur. Amicitia, inter personas eiusdem sexus vel diversorum sexuum exculta, magnum pro omnibus bonum constituit. Ad spiritualem perducit communionem.
  • St Francis and St Clare also provide a great example of a chaste opposite-sex friendship, which can lead to a mutual growth in faith and in holiness (quoted from here)
  • St John Paul II said:
“God has assigned as a duty to every man the dignity of every woman: and to every woman the dignity of every man. He assigned to everyone—both to man and woman—their own dignity”
  • “Fashion and modesty should well go and walk together as sisters since both words have the same root, the Latin modus which means just measure, below and beyond which can be just or reasonable (Horace , Sermones [Satires] I, 1, 106-107). — Pope Pius XII
  • “a young woman can be modern, cultured, athletic, graceful, natural and distinction, without bending at all the vulgarities of an unhealthy fashion,” — Pope Pius XII
  • Read also, The Four Loves by C.S. Lewis
  • Saint Teresa of Avila and Saint John of the Crossbest friends. Teresa and John flourished in their friendship together and supported each other through hardships such as the Spanish Inquisition and imprisonment. Teresa urged other nuns and priests to form deep and meaningful friendships, for she believed such friendship created lasting spiritual bonds and showed God’s love.

The website linked goes to an article about a woman asking her husband what he’d like her to wear and, trying to be funny, wears a sheet over her tied with a sash and asks him, “THIS?” And he agrees. The article continues to give precise measurements and “fashionable” advice for us women to accept this and wear, LITERALLY, what they call, “The Mary Dress.”

“It resembles a cross between a medieval gown and the clothes of first-century Palestine.”

I’d like to point the reader to the Papal quote (which has more weight than anyone under Papal authority BTW) :

  • “Fashion and modesty should well go and walk together as sisters since both words have the same root, the Latin modus which means just measure, below and beyond which can be just or reasonable (Horace , Sermones [Satires] I, 1, 106-107). — Pope Pius XII
  • “a young woman can be modern, cultured, athletic, graceful, natural and distinction, without bending at all the vulgarities of an unhealthy fashion,” — Pope Pius XII

The Mary Dress – cute? Sure maybe to some people… But an obligatory dress for all Catholic woman? NO.

So stop promoting it as that. It’s not true. That’s a lie by the way, which is just as sinful if not more sinful than the sin of dressing immodestly. Just so ya know. And don’t blame me for this way of thinking – blame the Catholic Church, if you must.

And on a personal note, in private I honestly wouldn’t care what my husband asked me to wear.. but if it was to cover up in B.C. Palestinian clothing I might worry a bit…

 Colleen Hammond worship?

So this is just satire on my part. But you WOULD think that such “Catholic ‘Modesty’ Cultists” such as these would think of the Virgin Mary as a hero more than a mere human being who (GASP!) promotes the idea that Modesty and Fashion go together?

We shouldn’t place anyone at such a high bar that we think they can “do no wrong”. They are human beings, just like us.

So much for subtlety?

If this was so filthy and immodest why on earth are they making sure we are all looking at these images so vigorously? Just a question.

Oh, and this sort of dress isn’t even close to the kind of filth on television today – try Sodomy, Transgender in children, Violence, Language, Blasphemy in all forms, sacrilege, etc.

And thanks for making sure we look exactly where you think the immodesty is coming from… Pretty sure I didn’t need to take a gander at these poor women’s body parts today…

Not sure about y’all but, I vote for trying not to look at these poor women as the industry wants them to be looked at  – like objects. I prefer praying for them, and acting modest in my own dress, thoughts and actions. Without displaying them as objects, slandering them, and giving others more chance to ogle at them.

This sort of “SHOWING SUCH IMMODESTY” is everywhere and is honestly the worst tactic ever.

Now, who said this is correct?

Floor length is saintly! Knee length is first ring of hell. Micro skirts are a special ring of hell.

Here’s a questions : who  said these exact words? I’d love to see your sources, because according to my Church, the (ahem) Catholic one – we are not judged solely by our clothing. As mentioned before, a woman (or man!) who dresses immodestly without knowing it may be judged for it, but certainly not as harshly as a woman or man who purposely dresses to be immodest.

So are you saying this gives us all the right to go and start labeling others on the street?

“Okay lady, you are going to the special ring of hell!”

“That woman is going to hell! And the 9th ring too! “

I am pretty sure that no women will come to the light of Christ by you telling her that her skirt merits the 6th ring of Hell.

Last I saw, the Catholic Church discourages, AHEM, forbids us to judge where a person is going.

As we all have the right to judge by our conscience, this does not mean all of us have a perfectly – educated Conscience. And we cannot know the deep desires of the other.

We are called to get to heaven ourselves, be examples, and when necessary and charitable – help others.

This sort of “information” is in no way, charitable, nor an exemplary form of Christianity. It is not informative in any way; nor has it any explanations of where exactly this sort of rubbish comes from.

Catholic Catechism: 1781 Conscience enables one to assume responsibility for the acts performed. If man commits evil, the just judgment of conscience can remain within him as the witness to the universal truth of the good, at the same time as the evil of his particular choice. the verdict of the judgment of conscience remains a pledge of hope and mercy. In attesting to the fault committed, it calls to mind the forgiveness that must be asked, the good that must still be practiced, and the virtue that must be constantly cultivated with the grace of God:

We shall . . . reassure our hearts before him whenever our hearts condemn us; for God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything.52

1857 For a sin to be mortal, three conditions must together be met: “Mortal sin is sin whose object is grave matter and which is also committed with full knowledge and deliberate consent.131

1862 One commits venial sin when, in a less serious matter, he does not observe the standard prescribed by the moral law, or when he disobeys the moral law in a grave matter, but without full knowledge or without complete consent.

Last I checked, “Immodest Dress” is not on the list of “intrinsically evil” sins.

Great! Let’s just all dress like Mary Queen of Scots! I mean, there were no other Canonized Saints in the Catholic Church that wore anything LESS than this! Because apparently anything else will damn us to the “9th” or “1st” ring of Hell right!?

PSST! Pretty sure even this sort of dress reminds men of female parts.. just sayin’ :

 A “Gentle reminder. “

Uhm, yeah can we talk about this?

I have literally been told this.

The grand finale

Losing (how many millions of) lives for nothing, have a Communist world, more people dying at the hands of Hitler in Camps, and God-knows what else is NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

…Compared to the fact that World War II brought women wearing pants so.. it would have been better if we would have lost the war.

Image result for have you lost your MIND!? gif

And finally kissing is sex so…

Image result for wow um gif

But that’s okay because it goes perfectly with what these guys were saying too!

So the next time my grandmother, Sister, Mom, Dad or even my Dog tries to hold my hand or kiss me, I’ll immediately jump up and run away in fear of committing the sin of Fornication.

And especially during the Kiss of Peace for Mass.. golly.

And if I’m about to fall down and someone offers their hand I will refuse them, so I will not commit the mortal sin !

Final thoughts?

  •  We are all better off following the Catholic Church – period.
  • There are many twisted views on what Catholic Modesty is out there, that are better left unfollowed.

“And many false prophets shall rise, and shall seduce many.”
[Matthew 24:11]

“But prove all things; hold fast that which is good.”
[1 Thessalonians 5:21]
